Brent Gates attended Grandville High School in Grandville, MI, where he twice received All-State honors for baseball and was selected to the Michigan High School Dream Team. Gates was later inducted into Grandville's Hall of Fame and the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame.
At the collegiate level, Gates attended the University of Minnesota, where he played for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. While at Minnesota, Gates was a member of the college baseball All-American Team and was named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Year.
Gates was later inducted into the University of Minnesota Hall of Fame.
Brent Gates was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the first round of the 1991 Major League Baseball Draft. Gates made his major league debut with Oakland on May 5, 1993, and appeared in his final game with the Minnesota Twins on October 3, 1999.

Brent Gates is the head coach of the varsity baseball team at Grand Rapids Christian High School, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Gates has led Grand Rapids Christian in three state championships, two state runner-up, six district championships and six regional titles. Gates has a high school coaching record of 298-89 in 11 seasons.
